Spinal Curves
As we viewed in the sagittal planes, the
Spine contain four normal curves.
Primary curves
Curves that are present at birth
,the thoracic and
Sacral curves which are concave anteriorly are referred to
as primary curves.
Secondary curves
Curves that do not develop until
The weight of the body brings to be supported in
Sitting and standing positions.
The lumber and cervical curves which
are concave
posteriorly.
A condition which Affecting the spinal curves
Spinal curvature is influenced by
- Heredity
- Pathological condition
- an individual's mental state
- Asymmetric Forces to which the spine is habitually subjected
Abnormal spinal curves
The four spinal curves can become distorted when
The spine is habitually subjected to two asymmetrical forces
- lordosis
- kyphosis
- Scoliosis
Lordosis
lordosis also known as swayback, is a condition in which the spine in
the lower back has an excessive curvature.
Exaggeration of the lumbar curve, lordosis is often associated with
Weakened abdominal muscles and anterior pelvic tilt.
Causes
- Congenital spinal deformity
- Weakened of the abdominal muscle
- Poor postural habits
- Overtraining in sports, Lumber Hyperextension.Gymnastics, figure skating, swimming and butterfly stroke.
- Obesity
- Osteoporosis (weakening of bone with age)
- kyphosis
- achondroplasia (a form of dwarfism)
Sign and Symptoms
Usually patients with lordosis do not have any symptoms except for the exaggerated spinal
Curvature. Other symptoms which may appear according to the severity of the curvature
- Pain in the back
- Pain may radiate into the legs
- Changes in the bowl and bladder, although this is rare.
- Dystrophy of muscles and neuromuscular problems
Investigation for lordosis
- X-ray
- CT scans
- Bone scan
- MRI scans
Treatment of Lordosis
Treatment of lordosis depends on the severity of lordosis
- If the lordosis is mild, then treatment is usually not required.
- Medications such as NSAIDs or pain killer used to decrease the pain and swelling.
- Braces Should be worn to prevent further worsening of this condition.
- Surgery, For severe cases of lordosis which does not benefit from the above measure, surgery is required where the spine is straightened by using, metal rods, screws and hooks.
- Physical Therapy (Rehablitation)
- Corrective exercises for lordosis
- Stretches for lordosis
- Hip flexor stretch
- Lower back stretch
Strengthening exercises for lordosis
- Abdominal crunch
- Twisting crunch
- Bridge
